still in denial..

Teeni over at the vaguetarian tea room has a great video clip of an old group of the 60’s(not even sure their name) ; singing about the end of summer…

(Whaaa) I am still in denial about summer ending…..Every year it is the same. I wait excitedly for summer, make lots of plans and get enthusiastic about the anticipated good weather. THEN the season arrives and as usual fails to fulfill its contract. NO hot days, no good weather for BBQ’s and to top it all, hardly any luscious produce from the garden.

We had wet, dull weather for the early part of July and THEN a few nice days. The nice days were starting to lull us all into believing that, “summer had arrived”. But NO! A day of two later, BACK came the rain, wind, dullness…

I remember the summers of my childhood. It seemed that the days were bathed in endless warmth and sunlight. We ate our meals out on the deck and lived in our bathing suits. We even slept outside on old army cots and revelled in being allowed to read there as long as it was light(which seemed SO late..lol) ; using the flashlights at last when we were sure there’d be no final parental checks.
It was HOT! My mother fed us cold salads (potato, chicken, or green with cold meats). My father must have BBQed once in a while. She didn’t cook as it would heat the house too much. My father would leave the front and back doors OPEN to cool it down during the night. We drank gallons of kool aid and lemonaid(which we also tried to sell door to door, without much success..lol)

So I am going to keep my denial. You will see me still hauling out my shorts on sunny days, and blithely stepping outside to find that it IS too cold to continue wearing them. I will get around THAT though by combining them with the charming addition of a fleece jacket. (This is the west coast style..lol) Prepared for ANY weather that way!

  1. LOL. I’m with you Merri – I really hate seeing Summer end. And some of your childhood memories sound a lot like mine. Those were the good ol’ carefree days, no? Ahhh – nostalgia.
Yes it IS tough! Funny as some people seem only too glad for fall to arrive…
That is funny! Yes ahh , nostalgia…indeed!
    :)

  2. I am sorry that you are lamenting the loss of your summer. I, however, am finally starting to get out my summer clothes! We are into spring here and summer is on the way. It will be nice after seeing/hearing about the hot sunny weather on all my Northern Hemispherean friends’ blogs for the past few months!!

Enjoy the last day of YOUR summer, and remember, it really will come around again in no time! Until then, perhaps you can live vicariously through my blog? ;-)
Oh that is so true, and it must have been tough listening to all of us northeners go on about the heat and so on in their summers..
That is what I will HAVE to do, Hannah! Good idea!
    ((hugs))
    :)
    Merri
