deer come to visit!

We have often lauded our singular good fortune in not having visits to our garden from the deer species. I have lived here for 20 years and not ONCE have had any  to sample the produce in the vegetable garden nor the rest of the vegetation in the yard.

We have been the kind of people who laughed meanly when we heard tales of total gardens being decimated seemingly overnight by the marauding deerish hordes. Similarly we smirked when in the garden centres and saw poor people trying the few recommended plants that deer supposedly will NOT eat. (but this garden centre information is a lie, as deer will eat ANYTHING short of the actual house)

But karma always lurks.

So the other night, I was woken by the sound of a crunchy sound; it reminded me of a horse enjoying a particularly juicy apple.

I thought it was H (lol) having a late night snack.

But no, he was asleep, yet the sound continued. It seemed to be coming from outside in our vegetable garden.

I got up and peered out in the early pre dawn dimness, but couldn’t see anything. I could hear some raccoons racketing about nearby but it wasn’t them doing the crunching. At this point, H woke and came to see ..

He immediately said, “there’s a deer there, can’t you see it?”

“no,(as I hadn’t my glasses on)..

He pointed it out (a smallish animal deeply engrossed in enjoying some radishes) He didn’t pause but immediately softly but effectively made a sound like a low, “woosh!

He didn’t want to wake the tenant (whose bedroom is right below ours)

The deer immediately took off…

So we hope that it will have been SO traumatized by this scary sound that it will never return. But I think the word is out and I am sure more deer will be coming to pay us a visit.

Darn…
