Shopping in the USA

We love going to Hawaii; have been so many times that it feels like our home away from home.

One of the minor reasons that I love going is for the shopping(!)

Oahu(the island upon which Honolulu, the capital city of Hawaii is located) has lots of good places to shop; Ala Moana being the biggest and finest.

But it is because Hawaii is part of the US which makes the shopping so great. There are so many stores and items in Hawaii (and the US for that matter) that respectively either don’t exist or else one simply cannot get in Canada.

I have NEVER understood marketing, and have a sneaking suspicion that it is is based on ill advised , stuffy “old men in suits” opinions.

As a consumer, I can say that IF the stuff is provided, people will buy it, simple as that.

It works the other way too; many things here in Canada are unavailable in the USA. I KNOW how frustrating THAT is for many of my US pals.

I remember being in a discussion group for Brtish Comedies and the topic of conversation turned to  British food items and how they WERE available here in Canada but not in the US. People were BEGGING the few Canadians (as it was a predominately US audience) to mail them certain covetted items.

I don’t know how well this worked for each party but it was rather sad to think that a person couldn’t just trot to their corner market and find what they wanted there.

Sure these days, many things in the world are available online BUT MANY sites will NOT ship to Canada. (and probably not to other countries either.)

Unfair?

You bet!

Do you know your neighbours?

I am sure that most of us know at least the people on either side of them; whether they live in a house or an apartment.

It is rarer to know folks more than 3 houses(or apartments) over.

I found an interesting site of which I have only discovered about 1/20th; It is called the directory journal web directory.

At first I was looking at its collection of abandoned buildings from around the world(a very haunting and interesting collection)

Then I stumbled upon the;

http://www.whoownsthisphonenumber.com/; a  service which supposedly lets one find the owner of any phone number(except it didn’t work for me..lol)

It redirected me to;

the white pages

and the reverse phone number section.

Well, this is where it got scary because I entered our own phone number and H’s name was listed; not so scary so far. But it has a section beside the entry, saying, “find neighbours”…

EVERY house in our street was revelaed with the owner and their phone number, even their occupation(if they so desired)

Maybe you already have this information, but it is weird because everyone else does too….

Anyhow the site Directory Journal is a very interesting site; check it out!

Remember the ease of the “link this” button?

I wonder why I never saw it disappear when it DID but one day I noticed that a tinybookmarklet app called, “link this”, was GONE.

This was the wonderfully easy way, when one was out and about visiting other blogs(and NOT necessarily at WordPress) , that a blog could be added to one’s blog roll.

I tend to favour easy ways over complicated(life is complicated enough as it is) and really liked this option. It was EASY, and smart and one had the option of naming the blog link whatever one wanted(not necesarily the blog’s name)

Does ANYONE remember this option? Did you like it, too?

Apparently the new wordpress build took it away; WHY??

I was thinking, if enough folks cared, that we could send an email to the caring folk here  at wordpress, asking that it be returned (either to the present build, or to future endevours.)

YES you can link to a blog if it is hosted HERE at WordPress, but not other sites…

*sigh*

Ever have this happen?

I often visit a forum and participate in discussions; as I did this morning.

I had replied to a posting, and this afternoon happened to visit the site and saw my reponse. BUT the response had an EXTRA sentence there that I DID NOT write.

It was saying that I had lost a link to a site due a recent format that I had done.

UMMM I have NEVER done a, “format” ,and in fact wouldn’t know the first thing about it. It’s a bit creepy because I now am wondering WHO changed my comment and WHY(and HOW???) I have never given out my password to anyone and all I can imagine is the forum owner added the sentence to my post

but again, how weird and WHY…

I am going to edit my comment back to what I said and mention that an extra sentence was somehow added before ; then see what happens.

EDITED to add…

It’s ok, it was one of the moderators who had a comment too, and wasn’t feeling %100 so clicked on the wrong area(thusly editing my comment rather than creating his own..)

He apologised and all is well!

:)

For those interested in games

I regularly visit a site that I can really recommend.

I used to visit it solely because it offered a free game (at first daily, then weekly)  and daily free software.That was the draw but I quickly became interested in visiting because of the great forum .

There the folks who have equal interest in games and software have managed to make a community that is  accepting and warm.

The address is as follows;
